Our History
The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) was founded in 1975 by a group of Black engineering students at Purdue University with the goal of increasing the representation of Black individuals in the engineering profession. Missouri S&T is proud to be a part of this nationwide organization, which has become one of the largest student-run organizations in the United States, with chapters in colleges and universities nationwide.
We offer a range of programs and services to support students pursuing degrees in engineering, including academic support, mentorship, networking opportunities, and professional development. Our chapter is committed to helping our members excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community.
Through our participation in NSBE, we can connect with other Black engineering students and professionals and advocate for policies and programs that broadly support diversity, equity, and inclusion in engineering and STEM fields. We are proud to be a part of a legacy of excellence and leadership in the engineering profession, and we invite you to join us in our mission to increase the number of culturally responsible Black engineers.

Our Offer
The National Society of Black Engineers is a dynamic organization that provides a safe and inclusive space for people of color on campus while offering opportunities for professional development. Our organization hosts various engaging events, including a homecoming gala, game nights, guest speaker series, professional dinners, raffles, and more. These events allow our members to socialize, build meaningful connections, and have fun on campus.
In addition to our campus involvement activities, NSBE offers valuable resources to help students navigate the professional space. Our career fair prep workshops, resume workshops, additional career fairs, and networking opportunities have proven incredibly beneficial, with approximately 90% of our freshmen obtaining internships in the 2022-2023 school year.
Our Mission
The mission of The National Society of Black Engineers is to increase the number of culturally responsible Black Engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact their community. At Missouri S&T, we are dedicated to enhancing this mission with our core values. We believe in not limiting ourselves and strive to help our members overcome any roadblocks or limitations they may face. When you join our chapter, you can expect our support in achieving your goals. We are invested in our members and believe that a small group of dedicated individuals can achieve more than a larger group who aren’t as invested.
Retention is also important to us, as we believe it’s not just about increasing membership numbers but retaining members dedicated to the mission. Our chapter works to create lanes and opportunities for our members by establishing connections with companies, individuals, and other NSBE chapters. This allows for networking, sponsorships, scholarships, and overall career advancement. We aim to positively influence our community and state by building future leaders. Our chapter is committed to increasing, strengthening, and creating connections with other NSBE chapters to advance the mission of the National Society of Black Engineers. By doing so, we hope to impact our community and contribute to a better future significantly.
